We currently have an exciting full-time opportunity for a Category Manager to join our National Merchandising department. This position has the option to be based out of our corporate office in Mississauga, ON, or Stellarton, NS. 

Reporting to the National Merchandising Director, the Category Manager will be responsible to: align corporate strategies that optimize sales, profit, customer offering and to meet overall performance targets within the assigned group of categories ; implement effective category plans with effective assortment, pricing, programs, plan-o-grams and promotional plans that support our merchandising strategies and financial targets; maintain effective vendor relationships and execute effective business plans that help purchase product at the best cost.

Job Description

What you'll get to do in this fast paced role:


Manage category plans
•    Develop Category Plans that support the strategy with a focus on generating sales and improved category performance relative to the market
•    Communicate category plans to all applicable stakeholders including leadership, other functional areas and vendor partners 
•    Execute category plans by successfully delivering against the category pricing, promotion, assortment, and merchandising plans that support our strategies and financial requirements 
•    Identify new opportunities from multiple sources including field merchandising, operations, vendor partners, market visits, etc.
•    Manage for an optimal mix of margin within respective categories
•    Manage performance targets for categories
•    Manage category plans for the following banners (as applicable): Sobeys, Safeway, IGA (West), Sobeys Urban Express 


Manage category performance 
•    Track, be knowledgeable and communicate actual category performance versus budget, target and/or forecast
•    Oversee action plans to meet forecasted financials


Manage the execution of merchandising categories
•    Build vendor relationships to enable effective negotiations 
•    Manage the category promotion-pricing strategies and ad planning process, delivering optimal customer value and margin performance for categories
•    Manage interactions with Quebec and Related Businesses 
•    Build relationships with store operations/franchisees
•    Build relationships with other functional areas (i.e. Merchandising Support Services, Operations, Finance, Replenishment, Marketing, etc.)


Lead Assistant Category Merchants 
•    Coach, develop and empower the Assistant Category Merchant
•    Deliver against KPIs to measure success based on category targets

Job Requirements

What your resume will include and demonstrate to us:


•    Minimum of 8 years relevant experience
•    Minimum 3 years experience in purchasing, merchandising, retail, manufacturing or a corporate environment 
•    Experience in Category Management
•    Strong Negotiation skills
•    Strong business acumen and relationship building skills
•    High level of adaptability and flexibility
•    Proficient use of the Microsoft Office Suite
•    Strategic Decision Making experience including analyzing various information resources to make decisions 
•    Results Leadership with experience making informed changes to achieve results
•    Ability to translate market trends and customer insights into strategies
•    Proficient use of SAP would be an asset
